You, as the website owner\/creator, get to choose what to include. Here, for example, are the meta keywords from\u00a0PetSmart\u2019s homepage:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-302\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zakandzu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Petsmart-homepage-meta-keywords.jpg\" alt=\"Petsmart homepage meta keywords\" width=\"450\" height=\"343\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.zakandzu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Petsmart-homepage-meta-keywords.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.zakandzu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Petsmart-homepage-meta-keywords-300x229.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This tells us that PetSmart wants to be found whenever someone does a Google search for its own brand (\u2018petsmart\u2019) as well as misspellings (e.g. \u2018pets mart\u2019) and other common terms relating to its products (e.g. \u2018pet supplies\u2019).<\/p>\n<p>AdSense (Google\u2019s banner advertising program) also reportedly uses meta keywords, among other things, to determine what ads appear on your web page.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Abuse-and-obsolescence\"><\/span>Abuse and obsolescence<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Unfortunately, it didn\u2019t take long for website owners to start abusing this feature. Meta keywords are\u00a0<strong>essentially invisible to your visitors<\/strong>; people will not see them unless they specifically look at the code. As a result, many companies began stuffing web pages with irrelevant meta keywords in order to show up in searches. Some even used their competitors\u2019 names and trademarks as keywords, which led to numerous\u00a0lawsuits!<\/p>\n<p>Google caught on to these abuses and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/webmasters.googleblog.com\/2009\/09\/google-does-not-use-keywords-meta-tag.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stopped using meta keywords to determine how websites rank in search results<\/a>. In fact, depending on\u00a0<em>how<\/em>\u00a0you use them, Google might see you as a spammer and penalize you for it.<\/p>\n<p>Bing appears to take a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/searchengineland.com\/the-meta-keywords-tag-lives-at-bing-why-only-spammers-should-use-it-96874\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">similar stance<\/a>. In a 2011 interview, Bing\u2019s Duane Forrester admitted that they see meta keywords as \u2018more of a spam signal, which ultimately leads to lower\u00a0rankings\u2019. Although he did go on to add that \u2018if [you] decide to use the tag [\u2026] follow the known best practices. Ultimately, it\u2019s the overt keyword stuffing that gets noticed and makes us want to look a little closer.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Google and Bing are the target search engines for many businesses and nonprofits. So, from a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/zakandzu.com\/seo-services\/\">search engine optimization<\/a>\u00a0standpoint, the big takeaway should be this\u2026\u00a0<strong>Meta keywords probably won\u2019t help you, and could hurt you if used incorrectly<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>And wait, there\u2019s more\u2026<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Competitive-espionage\"><\/span>Competitive espionage<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>You may be thinking: \u2018I don\u2019t use meta keywords in a spammy way. Why not just leave them there?\u2019\u00a0<strong>By openly listing your target keywords, you are inviting competitors to see your online marketing strategy and beat you to the punch.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For example, let\u2019s consider Siemens Healthineers, a company that specializes in products for healthcare providers. On their\u00a0USA homepage, you will find the following meta keywords:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-303\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zakandzu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Siemens-Healthineers-homepage-meta-keywords.jpg\" alt=\"Siemens Healthineers homepage meta keywords\" width=\"450\" height=\"327\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.zakandzu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Siemens-Healthineers-homepage-meta-keywords.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.zakandzu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Siemens-Healthineers-homepage-meta-keywords-300x218.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Siemens Healthineers wants to show up in Google searches for terms like \u2018medical expertise\u2019. Who would Google something like that? Answer: Doctors and hospitals \u2013 who happen to be Siemens\u2019 target customers. So that is a pretty good SEO strategy. The problem is that, by broadcasting this information publicly, Siemens may have weakened its strategy. For example, competitors like GE can look at this information as a roadmap for planning their own SEO strategy.\u00a0<strong>GE can make it so that, when someone searches for \u2018medical expertise\u2019, their website also shows up alongside Siemens\u2019 \u2013 maybe even higher up on the search results page!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is especially relevant for a new business or small business. Let\u2019s say that you recently dedicated significant resources to identifying the perfect keywords for your SEO strategy (including a few that none of your competitors are aware of). Then, you list them as meta keywords on your site. You may have just given your strategy away to a larger, more established competitor who can now beat you to the finish line before you even get off the starting blocks.<\/p>\n<p>Stop spying on<em>\u00a0yourself<\/em>\u00a0for your competitors. Stop using meta keywords.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Wait-so-I-shouldnt-use-meta-tags-or-keywords\"><\/span>Wait, so I shouldn\u2019t use meta tags or keywords?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>This confuses a lot of people.<\/p>\n<p>Meta keywords are NOT the only\u00a0<strong>meta tags<\/strong>\u00a0for websites. There are plenty of others that you SHOULD be using. One example is the \u2018description\u2019 meta tag, which produces that little blurb you see on the Google search results page. A well-written description can be the difference between someone clicking on your page or moving on to a competitor.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-301\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zakandzu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/meta-description-tag-search-engine-snippet-example.jpg\" alt=\"meta description tag - search engine snippet example\" width=\"750\" height=\"131\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.zakandzu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/meta-description-tag-search-engine-snippet-example.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.zakandzu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/meta-description-tag-search-engine-snippet-example-300x52.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Meta keywords are also DIFFERENT from\u00a0<strong>keywords in general<\/strong>, which are the backbone of search engine optimization.
