But it requires a little bit of work on the part of you \u2013 the website owner.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Protecting-Credit-Cards-Passwords-and-Private-Information-with-HTTPS\"><\/span>Protecting Credit Cards, Passwords, and Private Information with HTTPS<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>In September 2016,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/security.googleblog.com\/2016\/09\/moving-towards-more-secure-web.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Google announced that it would start flagging websites in Chrome that don\u2019t do enough to protect users\u2019 data<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If you are using an HTTP connection on your website instead of HTTPS (we will explain what that is in the next section) and have a web page where visitors type in a password or credit card information, then Chrome will display a warning that the website is \u201cNOT SECURE\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Although the initial announcement only referred to payment information and passwords, a later\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.chromium.org\/2017\/04\/next-steps-toward-more-connection.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">April 2017 announcement<\/a>\u00a0extended this warning to a broader set of cases (including all websites that collect information through contact forms, which is very common).<\/p>\n<p>Google also stated that \u201ceventually, we plan to show the \u2018Not secure\u2019 warning for all HTTP pages\u201d. So\u00a0<strong>even if this doesn\u2019t apply to you right now, it will very soon<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Firefox has also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/security\/2017\/01\/20\/communicating-the-dangers-of-non-secure-http\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">joined the party<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What-Is-HTTPS-Anyways\"><\/span>What Is HTTPS Anyways?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>We won\u2019t go into the technical details, but HTTPS is a more secure (encrypted) way for people to use your website than HTTP.<\/p>\n<p>How do you know if your website or a website that you\u2019re visiting uses HTTPS?<\/p>\n<p>Look at the address bar at the top of the page.<\/p>\n<p>See how the address for this page reads: https:\/\/www.zakandzu.com<\/p>\n<p>The \u201chttps\u201d at the beginning means that the Zak &amp; Zu Marketing website is using a secure HTTPS connection.<\/p>\n<p>If instead the beginning of the address had read \u201chttp\u201d (without the \u201cs\u201d) or nothing at all (such as www.zakandzu.com or just zakandzu.com), this would mean that the website is using a non-secure connection (don\u2019t worry, we\u2019re using the secure one).<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s so good about HTTPS?<\/p>\n<p>It makes it more difficult for hackers to steal the information that you share online.<\/p>\n<p>For example, say that you submitted your name, email address, and other information to us through a contact form on our site.<\/p>\n<p>The HTTPS connection will jumble your information so that if a hacker tries to read it, it will look like gibberish.<\/p>\n<p>If we weren\u2019t using HTTPS, the hacker would readily be able to see all of your information. This is especially dangerous when it comes to passwords, credit cards, and other sensitive information, which is why Google is using these security warnings to prompt action by website owners.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How-Do-I-Secure-My-Website\"><\/span>How Do I Secure My Website?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>This is where things get a bit technical, and you may want to get help from the person who created or manages your website (or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zakandzu.com\/#work-with-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">contact us<\/a>). It can be especially complex for old websites and large websites that have many pages.<\/p>\n<p>In a nutshell, you need to enable the TLS (transport layer security) protocol on your website.<\/p>\n<p>This is commonly referred to as getting an \u201cSSL certificate\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>A lot of web hosting companies make this pretty easy nowadays, requiring just a few clicks.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some helpful resources to guide you in case your website was built with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hc.weebly.com\/hc\/en-us\/articles\/115010923107-Enable-SSL-for-Your-Site\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Weebly<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/support.wix.com\/en\/article\/turning-ssl-on-or-off-for-your-site\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wix<\/a>, or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/support.squarespace.com\/hc\/en-us\/articles\/205815898-Squarespace-and-SSL\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Squarespace<\/a>. If you have a WordPress website or any other custom setup, contact us for help.<\/p>\n<p>The cost of HTTPS security varies greatly: from as low as eight dollars to as much as several hundred dollars per year. It depends on your website setup and what level of assurance you need.<\/p>\n<p>The nonprofit Let&#8217;s Encrypt also provides FREE (as in actually 100% free) SSL certificates, and many web hosts are gradually adopting it. At Zak &amp; Zu Marketing, we use Let&#8217;s Encrypt certificates.<\/p>\n<p>Keep in mind that you will have to renew your service every year.<\/p>\n<p>An expired certificate will result in a \u2018NOT SECURE\u2019 warning too, so set a reminder on your calendar a few days before the expiration date.<\/p>\n<p>Oftentimes, your website will still be browsable over the non-secure HTTP connection (if someone specifically types in http:\/\/www.youwebsite.com), and you may need to manually redirect visitors to the new HTTPS version.<\/p>\n<p>Some web hosts will do the redirecting for you automatically, but be aware of this caveat and check to see whether your hosting provider does this or not. If you are on WordPress, there are some helpful plugins available to make the process go smoothly \u2014 such as Really Simple SSL. Make sure that your sitemap and any resources that you reference also utilize HTTPS.<\/p>\n<p>Lastly, if you use Google Search Console and\/or Bing Webmaster Tools to manage your website, you will want to submit the HTTPS version of your website for indexing.<\/p>\n<p>In 2014, Google announced that they take the presence of HTTPS on your website as a positive factor for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zakandzu.com\/seo-services\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">increasing your search engine results rank<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There you have it.
